The Great Debate over Sex Education in Schools
Teacher: Okay class today I would like for us to discuss the debate over sex education in schools. I would like to start by asking what are some of the controversy’s surrounding sex education in schools that you know of?
Holly Jolly: I think the biggest controversy surrounding sex education in schools is whether it should be in the schools at all or if it should be left up to the parents to teach the children.
Bill: I would have to agree with Holly Jolly that one controversy is whether parents or schools should teach sex education. Teacher: Ermine you have brought up a very good point. In an article written by Steve Crabtree he states that those who are in favor of abstinence only sex education believes that teaching safe sex could send a mixed message leading kids to become sexually active; while people who are in favor of comprehensive sex education believe that focusing only on abstinence will lead to kids not being able to learning about valuable information regarding their health (1).
Bill: Really Ermine do you really believe that sex education will corrupt kids and make them promiscuous? The way I see it is anyone in their right mind knows that not all teens are going to wait until marriage to have sex whether they take sex education or not and I believe not telling them about ways to protect themselves will only hurt them in end. In an article written by Arthur Caplan he states that a survey showed that 70% of teens had participated in oral sex and 45% had intercourse at least once before turning 18. It was also found that teens who had taken abstinence only sex education and pledged abstinence until marriage where found to be less likely to use condoms or contraceptives and had similar rates of sexually transmitted infections compared to those who didn’t take the sex education class
