A theme that would tie into this video would be a will to survive. Homes and jobs were being lost every day because of the Great Depression. In 1929, the biggest economic disaster in American history struck the country when the stock market crashed. Before the stock market crashed, people were buying stocks by taking out loans from the banks. Once the stock market started crashing, people were in a panic and were removing all of their stocks which caused banks to lose all of their money. During this time, the economy was in really bad shape. Unemployment was at an all time high which made it hard for people to pay back the loans they took out. War veterans were supposed to receive a bonus from being in World War I, but they were due until 1945. The war veterans wanted their money now. So, 20,000 war veterans and their families marched to Washington, D.C. to determine what the government was going to do about it. They were called the Bonus Army. It was only a few years after stock market crashed and the government did not have the money to pay the veterans. President Hoover called in the Army to settle down the veterans and instead things got worse. The army brought tanks, tear gas, and extreme violence to the bonus army. During all of this, President Hoover stayed barricaded in the White House the entire time. In the end, 2 veterans and an infant were deceased. The Great Depression was a very stressful time period for everyone. Millions of people were feeling the aftermath of it and they were stressed and angry.
