The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is the type of novel that you will never forget. Fitzgerald’s use of powerful themes and motifs make for an extremely entertaining read. It is definitely one of my top 5 favourite books of all time, and I assume that it will live a lengthy life in my top 5 list. My first experience with this story was through the modern film adaptation featuring Leonardo DiCaprio (2012). I was captivated by the film as a whole; the performances, soundtrack, and plot were all amazing, bringing me to watch it again when it came out on DVD. There was something about Gatsby that had me on the edge of my seat, some sort of mystery he was hiding. The entire film had an subtle eerie vibe that felt extremely prominent at times. The entire novel is narrated through the eyes of Nick Carraway, a simple man that lives next to Gatsby. This point of view made for a unique read. It gave the reader the observations of what is occurring within the novel, while simultaneously supplying the reader with Nick’s opinion on certain matters. As a reader, every moment of the novel seemed to crucial, especially when Gatsby was included in the scene. Whenever he spoke, I felt as though his words were well thought out; he thought carefully about his words before he used them. I share this view with Nick, who also thought Gatsby was a very well spoken man. For the first 2 chapters the reader does not see much of Gatsby, unfortunately. In fact, Gatsby is only included in 6 of the 9 chapters. The beginning of the novel is mainly build up for Gatsby’s meeting with Daisy; the love of his life, the woman that he has wanted for years. Nick finds out about Gatsby’s parties and even attends some of them. Later in the novel, it is revealed that the main reason for the parties was to get Daisy’s attention; which he
