F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, explores the idea of the pursuit of dreams and the unattainable desire to recreate the past. People everywhere are motivated by similar dreams that give them meaning to the things they do. Gatsby builds his life around his dreams and they shape his identity while also holding him back from true greatness. He is obsessed with this dream and like many people, can only see that it won’t work out after he has already devoted so much to it.
Many people have had an unrealistic or unattainable dream. No clearer is the idea represented than in F.Scott Fitzgerald’s historical fiction novel, The Great Gatsby. Specifically with the main character,Gatsby, who is essentially the personification of the American dream. As such, he is fundamentally an innocent victim who is destroyed by his inability to accept reality.
A sweeping belief in America is that every individual has a dream, and all dreams are defined and curated by the dreamer. F. Scott Fitzgerald creates a modern commentary that reflects the idea of the complicated world around him in his novel The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald transcribes this idea into the pages of the novel and into the characters he conceived. The characters in the novel continuously put their dreams before their own sanity. They habitually put their desire for wealth, class, image and material before every aspect of their lives.

And one fine morning—" (Chapter 9) This quote represents Gatsby's unwavering faith in the American dream and his belief in the possibility of attaining it. The green light symbolizes his aspirations and desires, but despite his relentless pursuit, it remains elusive. Gatsby's faith in the dream is misplaced because it is built upon an illusion of limitless possibilities and a future that constantly moves further away.
Even if James Gatz had heard the Rolling Stones’ famed “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” lyrics, it’s doubtful his life would have changed. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s main character was so obsessed with escaping the poverty he was born into, that the idea that he might actually find all that he needed was impossible. Set during America’s roaring 1920s, The Great Gatsby details one man’s obsession with leaving his past behind and achieving a fairytale-level “greatness” among the New York elites he chose to define. Set on having it “all,” Gatsby spends his life tragically imprisoned in a dream world with standards so beyond reality that true happiness is never possible. In the book, and in the present day, his feelings are not unique.

The future that Gatsby wants with his dream girl, Daisy Buchanan, is more of a fantasy than a reality because she has a different lifestyle and family of her own. Gatsby realizes as he is with Daisy that night that she “tumbled short of his dreams- not through her own fault but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion”(Fitzgerald 101).

Fitzgerald gave Gatsby one focus, which causes him to lose everything he had “achieved”, he made this character’s story ironic.
