The Great Gatsby has become an accurate representation of the modernistic movement. In post World War I America, the idea of living habitually without change, became passé. Since new cultures and lifestyles were arising, citizens believed that they had the capacity to reshape and improve their environment. This fresh movement was called Modernism. The new ideal heavily impacted the grounded views of morality that were practiced for ages. Fitzgerald’s purpose for writing The Great Gatsby was to create characters like Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby that reflected his own life before, during and after the “roaring 20’s”.

Zelda was the daughter of a Supreme Court judge. When the war ended and Fitzgerald was deployed, he knew he had to find a job that was steady enough to be able to have a relationship with Zelda since she came from a family that was well off. But shortly after marrying Zelda, Fitzgerald continued writing his novels. He released The Side of Paradise which told the story of a woman named Amory Blaine. She is a girl from the midwest that does not come from wealth and tries to befriend two girls from the high class. He is a non wealthy man from the Midwest who moves to West Egg, Long Island where all the newly wealthy live. Nick Carroway was looking for a new place of inspiration. His infamous neighbor, Jay Gatsby, would throw extravagant parties every weekend. This novel is about that same man and his pursuit of his lost love, Daisy Buchanan. Sadly, Gatsby lost Daisy when he left for the war with no money, but five years later emerged a changed man with much wealth.
Fitzgerald creates characters such as Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway to represent himself throughout his life. Fitzgerald grew up in a small town in Minnesota and did not have much money but, he always strived for bigger things. Nick Carraway follows the same path as Gatsby did in his early years; being born in Minnesota and eventually attending an Ivy League School. Also, he moves to New York after the war in search of a profitable career. In gaining that profitable career, Fitzgerald was able to become a member of the idolized high class society, like Jay
