Gatsby has always had goals, and his mind has always been set on the same dream, being with Daisy. Although Gatsby wants a life with Daisy, that is not what he needs. Some dreams are not meant to be reality, and for him, that is exactly the situation. He is trying to force something that is not meant to happen. Gatsby is often stuck replaying his past encounters with Daisy, so much so that he is wasting his life. Gatsby has had the dream of being with Daisy and having everything he pictured come to life. He reminisces on the past so frequently, that it takes over his present. Gatsby has always been captivated by Daisy, and focuses his life entirely on reliving the past with her. Gatsby's mentality is that if he is with Daisy, everything will be perfect, and his life will be complete. This is not reality for him, and Gabby would somehow still feel incomplete if he had Daisy, which is the truth he is unwilling to face. Gatsby has been told numerous times that he can not repeat the past, and what's done is done, but he continues to try to despite everyone's logic. Despite his countless efforts to win Daisy, and be with her, it was not going to be a workout for Gatsby. He has wasted so much time on the idea that they could be together, and it never seemed to be something he could fully accomplish. Fitzgerald writes, “He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it”(Fitzgerald). Gatsby is blind to the fact that he is not able to dream something, then make it happen instantly. His dreams might not happen at all.
