LIfe is unfair. There is no reassurance of a second chance. When you take into account how many characters in The Novel, The Hate U Give, received second chances because of family and community and how unfortunate the others who lacked a support system were, you would recognize that second chances are not guaranteed. Khalil Harris was not very fortunate. Firstly, Khalil died suddenly, before he was given a second chance. “ Pow! Three, Khalil looks at me, stunned, he falls to the ground” (23). Before he had an opportunity to leave the gang, stop dealing narcotics, and turn his life around, Khalil passed away. Moreover, Khalil was lacking support. “ That's the hate they give us baby, baby, a system designed against us ” (170). Firstly, Maverick was a gang leader. “ I became a King Lord when I was twelve, stuff like that was the only way to survive ”(175). Maverick was deeply involved in the gang because when his father died everyone looked to him to become the new leader. Additionally, Maverick´s family gave him a reason to fix his life. “Growing up I was pissed at my daddy for going to prison and leaving me, and there I was in the same prison as him missing out on my babies´ lives”(175-176). Maverick didn't want to miss any more moments of his children's life. Finally, Maverick constantly makes decisions to benefit his family.“ In my new neighborhood I can simply tell my parents I´m going for a walk and leave” (373).
