The Great Depression was a war within itself and ordinary people were the heros. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the Finch family go through a bunch of situations that not many families go through. Atticus Finch, is the only parent Scout and Jem Finch both have. Their mother died and the closest thing they have to a mother is Calpurnia the maid. Throughout the novel, Scout and Jem both go through challenges, meeting new people, and trying to see Arthur (Boo) Radley. Atticus is a lawyer defending a “nigger” Tom Robinson. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is a lawyer defending Tom Robinson. The call to adventure first starts when Scout is at Finch’s Landing. She is then with her cousin Francis. “ He’s nothin’ but a nigger-lover!” (Lee 110) Francis said to Scout. After Francis said that, he ran through the house getting Scout in trouble by Uncle Jack. He spanked her and sent her to bed. It came as a shock because Atticus never spanked Jem or Scout. Uncle Jack was Scout's favorite. After that, Uncle Jack and Atticus talked. Atticus told him that because he didn’t have children, he didn’t know how to raise a child. That when the call to adventure ends. Every hero has a sidekick along their journey to help them. For Jem, he has two. Scout and Dill. Because Jem is the oldest out of the 3, Scout and Dill follow him around everywhere. Also because he is the oldest, Scout and Dill dare he to do things. As the “hero”, he does. In the end of chapter 1, “Touch the house, that all?” (Lee 18) jem asked. As if he was surprised that all. And as Scout and Dill’s hero, he did just that.
