Ever heard of a good horror story? Well, this story is a thriller addressing a man who could not comprehend he was dead. While Adams was getting stalked by a mysterious man who was not there led to his dreadful death. In “The Hitchhiker”, by Lucille Fletcher this is exactly that type of story. This story tells about a man who saw a hitchhiker which caused him to swerve, sadly passing away. The symbolism in this story is where we witness the fear of death in the main character’s eyes and how he cannot cope with the fact he is dead. When one dies, they cannot comprehend they are dead, thus this quote here. “I am trying to think, I am trying to get a hold of myself. Otherwise, I shall go mad” (10). When Adams calls his mother and realizes he is dead it is the fear of death through the eyes of the main character that cannot accept the fact that he is dead. This also affects others too, Adams mother, who ends up in the hospital. “Nervous breakdown? But my mother was never nervous”. “It’s all taken place since the death of her oldest son, Ronald”. “Somewhere I shall know who he is, and who I am” (10). Adams is realizing he is dead and wondering who he truly is. Mothers are always protective and Adams mother only wanted him to be safe and careful. “But you will be careful, won’t you. Promise me you will be extra careful. Do not fall asleep or drive fast or pick up any strangers on the road” (3).
