The Hunger Games is a screenplay adapted from the book by Suzanne Collins. It is written from the point of view of Katniss Everdeen, a sixteen-year-old living in a dystopian world ruled by The Capitol. The Hunger Games book has many similarities and differences to the movie, in relation to characters, plots and sub-plots, scenes and dialogue. A few notable similarities are the love story of Katniss and Peeta, Katniss and Peeta themselves, Haymitch, and Katniss’s and Haymitch’s communication and similitude. Although, the differences are more in number and easy to spot. Not only are most of the scenes altered to fit the frame of a movie, such as replacing Katniss’s internal monologue with explanations or actions by others or herself, but more …show more content…

Movie Peeta is virtually indistinguishable to book Peeta. Altruistic, loyal and hopelessly in love with Katniss. The love story is analogous between movie and book. The way that Peeta subtly hinted that he liked her, his selfless actions and behaviours towards her-such as pretending to team with the Careers, fighting off Cato (result: a sword in his leg) to save her life and refusing to let her get the medicine that would assist in curing his life-threatening ailment. The scene where Peeta begged Katniss not to go to the Cornucopia for his medicine is an example of this (page 332). “No, you’re not risking your life for me.” Were his words. Another, more obvious resemblance of the book in the movie is the character Haymitch. In the book and movie, he is a drunk loser, with a side of wit. Haymitch thoroughly understands The Hunger Games, including aspects such as publicity, getting sponsors, as well as survival techniques. Haymitch and Katniss are alike in the way they are clever and resourceful, an example of this is the way they communicated with sponsor gifts. When Katniss was caring for Peeta in the arena, Haymitch responded to them showing affection with gifts: which Katniss easily understood, because she has such a similar mind to Haymitch, whereas Peeta didn’t realise. On page 93, Katniss thinks: “Haymitch couldn’t be sending me a clearer message. One kiss equals one pot of broth.”
