The Impact of the Unions on Employers Student’s Name Institution Date The Impact of the Unions on Employers In a business setting, a union is a body that uses the power of collective bargaining to champion for the rights of the workers. The idea of forming a union started during the British Industrialization period, where workers felt oppressed by the landowners (Bennett & Kaufman, 2007). For a long time, employees sided with unions to air their individual grievances, and they have been successful. Today; however, the union membership is relatively small (Jackson, Schuler & Werner, 2012). It is the general belief that the fear of unionization serves to ensure that employers treat their employees well. This paper explains this fact. There are several reasons why employees may decide to join or form unions. The central cause is job dissatisfaction (Jackson, Schuler & Werner, 2012). The management could be the cause for this action – either poor employee-employer relations or poor working conditions. Firstly, the managers understand that the employees will fetch the profits that the business targets. Losing them would translate into losses. Therefore, investment in employees would only lead to increased output. In addition, the managers understand that the unions represent the people who cannot voice their opinions in public. More often than not, they employees expose the hidden aspects of particular businesses if workers decide to strike. Once such information reaches the media, the information may be blown out of proportion to such a state that the company’s reputation gets tarnished (Gall, 2004).
