Some things that people should know about the Civil War if they do not know anything about the Civil War is That when the southern states seceded from the Union it was because they felt that the Northern states were trying to take over the south and have less slave states and more free states so that more people would vote for free state politicians than slave state politicians. This is very important because when president Abraham Lincoln was elected it caused the slave state representatives to sucede for good from the Union. When the Civil War started and the very first battle happened and both sides met for the first time they both thought that the would not and the south would just go home and it would be over but they were mistaken. Abraham Lincoln and his emancipation proclamation was a amendment to free slaves that were only in the southern states against the Union. Abraham Lincoln could not free the slaves that were in other states because they were on the fence about joining the Union or not. The battle of Gettysburg is one of the bloodiest battles in the entire Civil War 23,000 Union soldiers were killed and 28,000 Confederate soldiers were killed in this battle. At the end of the three battles that happened at Gettysburg Abraham Lincoln said the Gettysburg Address addressing all of the fallen soldiers who fought honorably and died for what they thought was right.
