Role of Family Nurse Practitioners: Case Study The shortage of primary care physicians has been a problem in health care system and will continue to the next decade due to increasing of aging population. According to National Governors Association (NAG) (2012), the growth of the aging population combined with the initiative of the Affordable Care Act, the problem of primary care providers shortage is worsening. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are educated and prepared to perform primary care services as physicians do. More importantly, studies showed that NPs’ role as primary care providers achieve equal or higher patient satisfaction rates (Evangelista et al., 2011, Albers-Heitner et al., 2013).
There has been an extensive change in the U.S. demographics within last 50 years. According to Center for Health Workforce Studies (2006), in 2020, there will be about 54 million Americans above the age of 65 years as compared to 35 million in 2000. This number is expected to rise further at the rate of 12.5% to 20%, which means by 2050 every 1 in 5 American will be above 65 years (p. 2). This exhibits how baby boomer generation will have a significant impact on the current long-term care system. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the nursing students' interest in geriatric nursing, their attitudes towards older people, and their knowledge level about aging as outcomes of the newly implemented Learning with Older People Program (LOPP) (Koskinen et al., 2016). A thorough literature review of the topic was completed by the authors prior to the study, using research projects conducted in 2007-2015. The literature suggested that nursing students do not prefer working with older people, which creates a demand for nurses who are willing to care for the elderly. However, previous studies did not identify the most effective way to promote positive attitudes of nursing students towards older people. The research problem was formulated based on the literature review and stated that the nursing students’ interest in caring for older people needs to be enhanced through teaching and learning with older people (Koskinen et al.,
This will bring a surge of elderly people with functional and cognitive limitations; Functional limitations- physical problems that limit a person’s ability to perform routine daily activities; Cognitive limitations- losses in mental acuity that may also restrict a person’s ability to perform such activities (Wiener, J. M., 2013). Long- term care services are going to grow in the next 10 years, two- thirds of the total spending for long-term care come from government health care programs (Wiener, J. M., 2013). The long-term care services expenditure for the elderly is 1.3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), projected expenditures by 2050 will range from 1.9% to 3.3% GDP (Wiener, J. M.,
Many nursing schools in the US have waiting list to begin their programs secondary to lack of faculty. The average age of a nurse in the US is now around mid 40s to early 50s. Many of these nurses are expected to retire during the peak of the nursing shortage. The Affordable Care Act has some built in incentives to encourage physicians who provide primary care, which has been shown to lower mortality and increase life expectancy (Davis et al., 2011). Medical schools have reported increased enrollment
Recently the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) became a very important profession due to the major changes in the healthcare system and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) goals that focus on providing patients with affordable but quality care, improving patient health outcomes, expanding care to the underserved areas, and lowering the costs. It became apparent that over the years nurses played an important role in healthcare system. According to the National Governors Association (2012) “The demand for primary care services in the United States is expected to increase over the next few years, particularly with the aging and growth of the population and the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)” (p. 1). In addition,
Long-term care policy is to guide the development of the system of power, its decisions should be based on national or regional cultural characteristics, resources and other policy objectives. In a long time period, long-term care was considered to be a personal issue be classified as personal and family responsibilities, public policy intervention less number because of personal or family poverty, by charitable organizations and concerned sectors of society to receive welfare. For nurses to be knowledgeable and supportive to care for baby boomer patients 2-3 times older than them, nurses should be trained adequately, so they can better advocate for their patients. Who is responsible?
Between 2010 and 2050, the United States population ages 65 and older will nearly double, the population ages 80 and older will nearly triple, and the number of nonagenarians and centenarians—people in their 90s and 100s—will quadruple. (KFF, 2015) Trustees of Medicaid are forecasting that in 2024, Medicaid will start running out of funding. Although there is little evidence in the trustee’s projections it is still something that needs to be looked as more and more people are getting older and are needing benefits vs a number of people putting in. For the purpose of this assignment I have chosen to reflect on not knowing how to treat a confused patient with dementia. During this experience I felt like I was of no help to the patient and as a result I was useless to the staff. I felt like this because I didn’t know how to talk to this lady. I didn’t understand how to act or what to say to fix the situation.

When I chose pharmacy as a career, I became more attentive when I would have to go to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription. Most pharmacists in my hometown are nearing the age of retirement and there is not a younger generation to take over when they plan to retire. In the past 5 years, two pharmacies have permanently closed. I chose pharmacy to help with the lack of pharmacists in my hometown and to explain to others why drugs should be used in healthcare. My great-grandmother, my dad, or my best friend’s dad could not tell you how their medications improve their quality of life.
Finally, the government should provide courses that help remove the stigma that surrounds ageing. Today’s society has become obsessed with the young. If the government promoted the elderly, then more organizations would strive to accommodate the
