Alex Alonso talks about something very personal in his article “Overcoming Bias: A Personal Statement.” Coming from Latino roots, he has found himself a victim to bias. Bias, (according to the Glossary, The SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge, 2017) is conscious or unconscious beliefs that influence a person’s perceptions or actions, which may cause that person to become partial or prejudiced. A past professor of his offered him and his high school peers some words of wisdom; “A mind made noble leads a noble life.” This piece of advice has consoled Alonso for years.
The book Bias written by Bernard Goldberg explains how the liberal media distorts actual news and as a result impacts society negatively. Goldberg joined CBS News in 1972 and retired 28 years later, in 2000. Goldberg describes the distortion in present day due to no diversity of opinion in the newsroom, so no matter how many news executives go on about diversity, about ethnic, and racial diversity and how much they say we need that to go out the full story about things, they don’t seem to care much about intellectual diversity or diversity of opinions. This is why journalist can bash on a certain side or cheer the other side and wont fear about what will happen. Goldberg views Conservative news as evil and liberal media as right.
Everyone holds biases whether they believe it or not. Facing your biases will help you overcome and better yourself. Biases are often personal but can also be professional. Ignoring these can led to harm further down the road. I have a personal bias for immigrants, being one myself I often feel for fellow immigrants.
Bias is such a prevalent part of today's society and it plays a massive role in forming opinions and making important decisions. However, when that bias applies to people and the color of their skin, it can become extremely detrimental to society and the lives of many. Born A Crime, an autobiography written by Trevor Noah, explores the effects of this ideology. Noah was born in South Africa during the time of apartheid, which is the physical separation of races on the basis that white people were superior and every race was inferior. Racial mixing was considered illegal and could lead to the child being taken away along with the incarceration of the parents.
Throughout history, race has been an ongoing theme. Race was used to define a person as well as the rights that they held. People of races other than white were given little to none respect and were not treated as human beings but instead property. It was a constant battle between races, therefore forming a them versus us society. Through history there were many people who were treated based off their race, there were many different government made laws and documents that defined and laid out the rights of those certain races.
The definition of race changes constantly, and as such, race can be said to be neither static nor biological. After years of research, scientists have failed to prove any biological relationship between race and anatomy, proving that the motives behind racializing people must be political. The white race relies on this sense of racialization in order to maintain its socially constructed supremacy over so-called “non-whites”; therefore, settler colonialism acts as justification for racial inequality, and people of color are forced to seek equality through intersectional approaches. A racial project consists of representational strategies that artificially produce concepts of race in American society.
However, I am biased because I am of Arab descent and I know what it feels like to judged unfairly. What I will agree with is that I do sometimes associate individuals with a certain race. It also helped me realize why people believe special education can be too costly, burdensome, and infective. It also taught me the biases towards people with disabilities still exists, and why it can be a civil rights issues. Also he explains why they cannot be separated based on different references. In addition, he raises examples depends on the organization CCRC whom their purpose to reduce violent and conflict through variable skills. Moreover, he concludes that difference is accepted, when the individuals accepted on themselves and others. In the end he recommends people should expose more to the culture and to understand that change will not happen rapidly, but it takes time.
This means that two people of the same race can be more different from each other than they are with people of other races.
