Books are Dying
Censorship is the suppression or prohibition of any part of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. Children should be able to read whatever they would like. Banning books interferes with children’s or teacher’s education. Banned books are being taught in schools for a reason. Banning books from schools or libraries interferes with people’s first amendment rights.
Children or other people should be able to read whatever they would like. For example, “Everyone should have an opportunity to read any literature of their choosing and form his or her own opinions based on the reading,” (Naha 1). When children are young, their brains are like sponges, they are absorbing all of the information around them and processing it in their own way. As stated on the NCAC website, “As these examples illustrate, censorship based on an individual sensitivities and concerns restricts the world of knowledge available to students,” (“The First Amendment in Schools: Censorship”). Just because you do not enjoy a book or you have a problem with it, that does not mean you have to take it away from everybody. This takes away from a child’s education. Also, “Censorship is particularly harmful in the schools because it prevents youngsters with inquiring minds from exploring the world, seeking truth and reason, stretching their intellectual capacities, and becoming critical thinkers,” (“The First Amendment in Schools: Censorship”). Taking away books from children or teachers makes education even more difficult. Teachers may not be able to use a certain piece of literature because it is banned so they have to use a piece of writing that is not as relevant or will not be able to teach the topic as well.
