Dear AP Student, Congratulations for signing up for this class. Let me personally welcome you to what will be one of the most fun yet difficult English classes of Regis Jesuit you may experience. You have just opened up a world of exciting literature, rigorous studies, and very little sleep. However, if you can get the hang of this course (that will no doubt teach you the basic skills you need to know for any kind of writing), you WILL go far in life. One major component of “AP English Language and Composition” is actually getting down to the nitty-gritty, to actually write a… composition.
The University of Alabama’s graduate program in Composition and Rhetoric would allow me to reach my goals in becoming an English teacher within the community college system. As a non-traditional student my journey to higher education started at a community college. I quickly noticed that where college students in that system struggled the most was when it came to their skills in writing. The students lacked any direction or foundation on how to write properly and effectively. Because of this deficit in their skill set
Thrasymachus’ View of the Nature of Justice In the Republic by Plato, Thrasymachus argues that justice is what the strongest define it as in order to benefit themselves. Thrasymachus is skeptical of commonly-held views of justice because he believes that a just person receives less and is unhappier than one who is unjust. According to Thrasymachus’ view, people should act unjustly, but have the reputation of one who is just. I agree partly with Thrasymachus’ view of justice because justice is often the way he describes it as “the advantage of the stronger,” but that does not mean that is how it ought to be (338c).
The Benefits of Taking AP Classes in High School Why spend hours doing homework in college, when you could have done it in high school? “The Advanced Placement program has revolutionized high school classrooms around the United States. The program offers rigorous, college-level education to motivated students, and offers the benefit of college credit.” (Mattimore A33).
If you treat all writing assignments as practice for the exam, then you will become more comfortable with writing essays. It is important to develop your writing skills during AP English, so that you can score well on the test. To be successful in AP English you need to take advantage of
What am I doing here? A student themselves chooses whether or not their education will be an extra challenge in life. It depends on how ambitious one is to be a successful person in the future, or how lazy a person is and not having any motivation or inspiration to do better. Not everything in life will come in easy, so there is nothing that I can have too much of that cannot be an advantage later on. That being said, there are reasons to why each of us was driven to take AP Literature, having in mind of what we want to gain from it, and eventually you will realize what can be expected from each and every single one of us.
In high school, I took AP Literature and I feel as though it prepared me very well. My teacher helped me to develop my writing into something I could be proud of. In high school, we were required to use notable sources that were academically worthy. For example, everyone used Galileo to find credible sources for their specific topic. In my English classes, we read and analyzed notorious novels and short stories.
I came into my first college writing class feeling prepared thanks to you and your investment in me as a student in your AP Lang class. I developed as a writer more than I ever had in your class, and it definitely helped me in my college writing class this semester. I already knew how important it was to revise and continuously critically think about my writing, as well as the importance of multiple drafts and peer review. My English 110 class this semester was very similar to yours because we also did multiple drafts where I could revise my paper as many times as needed. The big difference was that the focus was on different genres and how to appeal to those, which was something new compared to my high school English courses.
One of my strengths upon entering the AP Language and Composition Class was grammar. Throughout my schooling years, I was always able to comprehend English grammar concepts very easily. Over the year, I have enhanced these skills, now I can describe a clear distinction between the types of sentences (exclamatory, imperative, and declarative for example) and I understand ideas such as clauses and warrants as well. Another one of my strengths is speaking. I have a strong ability to express my ideas and opinions to a large group of people (my class.)
At the beginning of the year, I found that I could not succeed at AP Language with what I had learnt in EAP. Under timed settings, I had a hard time building claims and finding evidence; in other time, my writing could be redundant and hard to understand. Therefore, I have set a list of goals, and I have critically reflected my writings according to these goals. Throughout the year, one of my strengths is clear transitions between ideas in my essays. Another strength has been applying SOAPStone to integrate sources after I became familiar with the analysis tool.
Over the course of the semester, my main goal was to become a more precise writer and develop my identity as a writer. According too, the Portfolio Letter assignment sheet, becoming a better writer consists of precise planning, draft and revising. It also includes understanding a variety of academic genres by examining the basic characteristics that defines each type. In order too efficiently meet my goal of becoming a better writer, it was very important to have my work evaluated by others and myself as well. The use of rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading and writing all are the important aspects in this course.
When I asked my upperclassmen friends last year about their opinions on AP Language, these were the responses I got: “AP Language will be the death of you”, “Whatever you do in your junior year, don’t take Lang”, “It’s not worth it”, “My hardest class is AP Language”. I was told all the horror stories of annotations, timed writes, and portfolios last year as I was trying to decide if I should enroll in AP Language and Composition. However, I decided to challenge myself and push myself out of my comfort zone, so I nervously enrolled for the class in January of 2017. This semester I learned that while this class was indeed a challenging course, it has pushed me to improve not only my writing skills, but also my work ethic.
By taking English Composition I, one is presented with the opportunity and guidance on how to be a better writer. In the beginning of every module there will be required readings, instructions, guidelines, and how to guide for a person to fully understand and learn about the task. The assignments that I have experienced in English Composition I was challenging and required
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
Each essay I wrote took me several time to write, several drafts which show that I have improve every time I do the drafts to write a perfect masterpiece. I learned a lot of skills and techniques this quarter, which has helped me to improve and progress my writing skills for the future. I will remember the skills, techniques, and tips that professor gave us in this English class for my higher education. For example, all the time that I went to visit professor Sapozhnikov office hours to receive help on my out-of -class essays has helped me to improve, grow, and progress in my writing skills as a writer. Some of the significant changes I have made as I was progressing and growing were to develop a strong thesis to help support my claims as I write my essays, such as facts, observations, illustration, and examples.
