The Importance Of Skills-Based Health Education

They should be able to solve their problems skilfully and make absolute decisions that should be healthy for them as well as for others. Life skill is a strong foundation for a healthy and successful development of a child. Life skills not only develop an individual healthy but it also contributes to develop inner resources to withstand the pressures of the daily life challenges and risks.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO 2003, document – 9), skill based health education focuses on developing the knowledge, attitudes, values, and life skills that young people need to make and act on the most appropriate and positive health – related decisions. Individuals who possess these skills are likely to adopt and sustain a healthy lifestyle during their school years and throughout the rest of their lives. The WHO stresses that skill – based health education has been shown by research to achieve the following:
• Reduce the chances of young people engaging in delinquent behaviour and interpersonal violence.
• Delay the onset of using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
• Prevent peer rejection and bullying.
• Teach anger control.
• Promote positive social adjustment and reduce emotional disorders.
• Improve health – related behaviours and self – esteem.
• Improve academic performance.
Self Regard is one such life skill which can improve the student’s psychological problems like anxiety, depression, disappointments, underachievement, delinquency, violence, alcohol and drugs
