The Importance Of The Anti-Federalists

The Anti-Federalists were very important to establishing rights for the citizens of the United States. They were a group of people who opposed the ratification of the Constitution. The Anti-Federalists felt that the power in govenment should be held by the states, rather than the national government. Self governing of the people would not work with such a large group of citizens with different concerns. They "argued for a very small limited government based on common interest and a common education and virtue." (Video Lecture, "Anti-Federalists.") Their belief was that the people would grow bored with politics that do not directly involve their everyday life. Americans would be more interested in local politics than that of large govermnent.
