While analyzing Disney stories may not appear beneficial, it does provide a somewhat accurate account of historical perceptions from 1937 to present day . The first question to analyze is which came first the chicken or the egg; is it society that influences Disney’s presentation or is it Disney’s ideals that ultimately influence society or are both in effect. I plan to answer this conundrum by analyzing the values, professions, and family structure in each decade and the decades surrounding that in question, while looking for patterns with the corresponding Disney characters. If the societal changes are in line or prior to the character changes then society is likely influencing Disney, whereas if the social changes are after the character and story developments then Disney may be influencing society. Next, I might look into motherhood in Disney movies and its relevance to family values and structure in our society. A number of main characters have no or only one parent(s), usually a father, and I am curious to see if this relates with the family structures. Additionally, I plan to look into the number and motives of the female protagonists and antagonists, and see if there is a difference between them and their male counterparts.
