The iconic love story, Romeo and Juliet, unknowingly influences teens today in unrealizable ways. Romeo and Juliet is a popular piece of literature because the book influences our relationships today. Romeo and Juliet was written in 1595 by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story that currently impacts modern society. Romeo and Juliet has shaped romantic relationships today and influences modern society’s expectation on relationships. Because of the belief that love at first sight is real and that teens get emotional over an unworthy relationship, society believes the only way for true happiness is to be in a relationship. Teens believe that a relationship is meant to be even if they do not know each other very well. The belief that love at first sight is true affects teens because they get emotionally wrapped up in their partner only to find out it was not meant to be. Juliet had regrets at the Capulet party where she first met Romeo. Though, she did not know he was a Montague until after their encounter. In a lot of TV shows today, it is popular to have a teenager mourning over a relationship. This happened in Romeo and Juliet, where Romeo was mourning his potential girlfriend Rosaline. Rosaline wanted to remain pure and devote herself to God and this upset Romeo. On page 21 Shakespeare wrote, “Out of her favor where I am in love” (Shakespeare 21). This brings up the point that maybe Romeo was more infatuated with the idea of being in love than actually loving Rosaline.
