Welfare State is a program of government programs that transfer money and services to Canadians. This Welfare State program began in 1938, right before the start of World War 2. This Welfare State program helped millions of Canadians with problems such as poverty, homelessness, unemployment, aging, illness, workplace injury, disability, and the needs of children, women, gay, lesbian, and transgendered people (Moscovitch, 2006). Obviously having all of these problems was not a good thing for Canadians, but the government found a way to help their citizens. The Welfare State program was a significant improvement because many Canadian citizens benefitted from this.

An article from The Washington Post, “The Double-Standard of Making the Poor Prove They’re Worthy of Government Benefits” by Emily Badger, conveys her insights on the double-standard that is put on citizens who receive welfare benefits. We don’t drug-test farmers who receive agriculture subsidies, college students who receive Pell Grants, and wealthy families who cash in on the home mortgage interest deduction (Badger). No one seems to give a second glance when the government hands out money to farmers, college students, and wealthy home-owners because, when compared to the portion of the population on welfare, society has taught us who is more likely to abuse drugs. Today in American society, countless people feel that they are entitled to everything no matter what. People who abuse the welfare system is a perfect example of how people believe that they deserve everything without having to actually do any work, causing laziness and selfishness. These individuals misuse welfare that helps countless people by taking the money for individuals who can’t support themselves or can’t find a job, and use it as a way to get free money without working. Another problem is that some of the youth demands respect of others without earning it and expect a successful job right out
Millions of Americans receive government aid such as welfare every year. Of those Americans who are on welfare, many are unemployed. Some people may need welfare because they don’t make enough money to support their families. However, the amount of money spent on welfare every year is tremendous. Welfare should be taken away from those who don’t work.
