Welfare State is a program of government programs that transfer money and services to Canadians. This Welfare State program began in 1938, right before the start of World War 2. This Welfare State program helped millions of Canadians with problems such as poverty, homelessness, unemployment, aging, illness, workplace injury, disability, and the needs of children, women, gay, lesbian, and transgendered people (Moscovitch, 2006). Obviously having all of these problems was not a good thing for Canadians, but the government found a way to help their citizens. The Welfare State program was a significant improvement because many Canadian citizens benefitted from this.
The term “welfare” generally has a negative connotation when being discussed because it represents lack of resources. Many people think that it’s recipients may be “milking the system” or “lazy” and don’t want to go out and earn their living however, welfare can and should be used as a positive asset to society. However, it tends to be used as a crutch for longer than appropriate but, after conducting in depth research it has become obvious that this is rarely the recipients defect. The government creates these programs that are designed to help those in need and they generally do for some amount of time. But when an individual strives to obtain a higher paying job, it doesn’t even have to be much of a pay increase, they are at risk of losing for example, their rent assistance.
It is obvious that only the kids want welfare but, why is that? Rose Mary states, “Once you go on welfare, it changes you. Even if you get off welfare, you never escape the stigma that you were a charity case” (188). This statement from her tells the reader her why to not accepting welfare. In this sense welfare is symbolizing negativity and disservice to the family.
Recommendations: Since, Welfare-to-Work was designed on a state level, each state have their way of allocating the funds and it can be different from state to state. Therefore, we identified some issues in Wisconsin, Maryland, and general. Problem 1: Not having any work requirements for Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) recipients to receive benefits. Politicians believe the federal program would set up recipients for long-term use with no incentive of getting them off the program
While some insist the Welfare programs help families in need. They imply without such programs a person would not be able to support themselves nor their children. Both sides have a valid argument and both sides
I do not believe only the poor benefit for social welfare programs as such earlier tax collected pays for interstate highways and public parks which the rich and poor use alike. In addition, tax collected by the government pay the fire fighters and police which the rich and poor rely on fire or police protection alike. Davidson states that women on welfare do not sit around or are not of specific ethnicity, but rather they find themselves penniless in certain life circumstances. They usually stay in system for couple of years and often attend schools. Some of them may return to the system, simply because the jobs pay less than welfare and have no health benefits. The second argument that Davidson presents is that “welfare encourages teen pregnancy and large dependent families” (1997). The article addresses the myth surrounding welfare. Americans common belief government's aid enhances corruption among poor people has its roots in the past —even Franklin Delano Roosevelt considered welfare “a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit.” However, recent statistics highlights the beneficial’ effects of cash assistance for the poor. The welfare positively impacts the life of children, improving the quality of their nutrition and education. Moreover, in a moment of great economic recession the welfare is the only net that can support people in need.
An article from The Washington Post, “The Double-Standard of Making the Poor Prove They’re Worthy of Government Benefits” by Emily Badger, conveys her insights on the double-standard that is put on citizens who receive welfare benefits. We don’t drug-test farmers who receive agriculture subsidies, college students who receive Pell Grants, and wealthy families who cash in on the home mortgage interest deduction (Badger). No one seems to give a second glance when the government hands out money to farmers, college students, and wealthy home-owners because, when compared to the portion of the population on welfare, society has taught us who is more likely to abuse drugs. In most cases, welfare recipients are given a check from the government about once a month. This is a clear-cut, easy to see benefit.
Today in American society, countless people feel that they are entitled to everything no matter what. People who abuse the welfare system is a perfect example of how people believe that they deserve everything without having to actually do any work, causing laziness and selfishness. These individuals misuse welfare that helps countless people by taking the money for individuals who can’t support themselves or can’t find a job, and use it as a way to get free money without working. Another problem is that some of the youth demands respect of others without earning it and expect a successful job right out
Millions of Americans receive government aid such as welfare every year. Of those Americans who are on welfare, many are unemployed. Some people may need welfare because they don’t make enough money to support their families. However, the amount of money spent on welfare every year is tremendous. Welfare should be taken away from those who don’t work.
