Advertisement in Popular Magazine The intersectionality of race and gender in magazine is always one of various debate in American society. In popular magasine, people of color and plus size model lack represensation and therefore ideologies around race, beauty are transfomed, structured and even become normalized. Based on a study reported by the journal The Guardian, the author argue that only 22% of U.S. model were of color (Asian, Black and Latino). Another article from a well known fashion website, The Fashion Spot through a finding, argued that in 2017 only 1% of model in popular magazines were plus-sized models. Why do we see a trend of low representation of people of color and plus sized models in popular magazine? Does the overall …show more content…
Cosmopolitan also known as Cosmo is a popular women magazine in the U.S. in which articles on subjects such as relationships, sex, health, careers, self-improvement, celebrities, fashion, and beauty. Most importantly, it displays the latest trends in fashion using models. By looking at their ads. for summer clothing for instance, it is becomes clear that the numbers when dicsussing misrepresentation are accurate. I looked at 7 ads from that features clothings and the realization is that 72% of the models on those ads are white. There is a slight representation of women of color and most of these women are black. Out of the 18 models from the ads, 13 of the models are white and 4 of them are Blacks and one of them seems to be Asian or Latin. Out of these 18 models, 3 of them were super-sized model. In 3 of the ads. were an article that touches on issues regarding nudity. What I realized was that, when it displays nudity, black women’s body was likely to be shown. For instance, for an ads. regarding underwear and also talking about stretch marks, two women were displayed. The black women shot displayed a person naked shot and the white women with an underwear. The majority of its models have in the past been people of color. However, when looking at ads for products from the years 2016 through 2018, I seem to notice an increase in the number of white model or lighter skin model used. For instance, their ads for body sweamwer for both 2017 and 2018 features a tremendous range of women of all shades and body size. However, the focus of the magazine as I understand was a way to counter mainstream magazine for the lack of the representation of women of color in their ads. In Ebony magazine, the depictiction of the models describe women in poses that display their body’s beauty, but also poses that display some inner beauty such as ‘fearless’ and ‘loving’. One thing I do realize in ebony is the unequal ratio of female models over male models. I am not an expert on the issue, but from what I can observe, when going through the ads, it would be more likely to encounter ads that features women over men. Though a magazine that was originally created for black models, I do feel that they lack diversity as well. I believe that the issue of inclusion in the fashion industry is not only an issue of white models vs black models, but an issue of the preference of white models over people of color models. Therefore this issue is an issue for all of us and the poduim to share the difference must be share with other minorities as well. Though, I
