Scientific discoveries have the ability to change the world, in not only positive but negative ways as well. The video states that Darwin introduced the world to evolution and the principle of natural selection. This principle states that nature will eliminate weak or unfavorable genes. In essence, nature evolves by means of survival of the fittest. Those species who carry genes that do not help them protect, feed, or mate eventually die out. Scientists used this principle to choose the most optimum genes in plants and animals through selective breeding. However, it wasn't until the 1700s that scientists thought of applying this theory to humans. According to the video, the study of choosing specific genes in order to improve a species is called …show more content…

Moreau tries to turn animals into humans. The beasts turn back into their original animal form after some time. So, his efforts were useless and his creations end up being his demise. When Edward finally makes it off the island, he is reunited with normal people and he is immediately terrified by their appearance. He is seeing them as the drastically evolved versions of animals. H.G. Wells is subtly warning society about the dangers of gene selection. Moreau was somewhat successful in creating humans from animals, but when the creatures mated their offspring came out as the natural animal form. H.G. Wells is showing that no matter what science tries to do as far as gene manipulation, at the core of every creation is the original animal. He implies that humans are no more than highly evolved animals. Dr. Moreau can be compared to Hitler, cold callous and only worried about getting the desired results with no regard to how it affects the people involved. Dr. Moreau does not care that these creatures are being tormented; he is only concerned about the end results. Science that lacks sensitivity to the basic human emotions is cruel and unwarranted. Dr. Moreau has no real reason, other than self-satisfaction, for making these creatures. They will not help mankind in any way; they are more likely to hurt mankind instead. H.G. Wells is illustrating the moral responsibility of the …show more content…

Moreau makes animals into humans. Dr. Moreau took live animals and dissected them without any type of anesthetic. He made them endure every excruciating slice of his knife. This kind of barbaric behavior is similar to the ruthless and tyrannical acts of Hitler. In the 1900s, Hitler used the principle of natural selection and eugenics to spawn a “pure race”. He designed the Aryan race, which was fictitiously proven to be superior to all other races. By way of Hitler, the Jewish people were falsely accused of causing Germany to lose the war and were said to be profiting from Germany’s demise. For this reason and other “scientific” reasons, Jewish people were rounded up and sent to live in atrocious ghettos and eventually concentration camps. In the concentration camps, people were either forced to work to death or were shot and killed on site. Others were separated from their family and sent to gas chambers to be executed. This blatant disregard for life is comparable to the experiments Dr. Moreau performed on animals. It did not matter to Moreau what happened to the animals after he mutilated them. He did not consider how much pain they would be in or how hard it would be for them to remain in human form. The same goes for Hitler, he didn’t care about the torment the Jews faced. His only concern was to create his idea of a perfect race no matter how many innocent men, women, and children had to die because of it. Today, this type of
