The Klu Klux Klan started out as a racist group during the first era, which was right after the civil war. During the 1920’s the Klan had as many as 4 millions members. The Klan moved beyond just targeting blacks, and broadened its message of hate to include Catholics, Jews, Gays and foreigners. The Klan promoted fundamentalism along with advocating white supremacy. The Klan were the true patriots. They wanted the American Dream to be only achievable by Americans. The Klan was founded by Confederate Civil War veterans Captain John C. Lester, Major James R.
