Disappointments come in myriad ways and movies made from books are some of them. The Percy Jackson movies were a major disappointment when compared to the books. The movies were a disappointment due to the removal of key details and the changing of the plot.

If a movie producer makes a movie based off of a book, then he/she would need to stick to as much of the books details as possible, because people that have read the books will know when details have been changed from the book to the movie. The first movie, Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief, did not stick to the original book’s details. A major character that was mentioned in the book was Ares, the god of war. Ares was completely removed from the movie, even though he was the one who stole the lightning bolt and crafted the entire scheme. Several scenes had to be changed or removed from being put in the movie, which made the movie very different from the book. Ares was replaced by Luke in the movie as the lightning thief, which changes the whole storyline from the book. This change was very significant because from this change several others had to take place, such as the placement of the lightning bolt. In the book it was in a bag given by Ares to Percy, and in the movie it was in a shield given by Luke. A shield was not given to Percy until the Sea of Monsters by his half brother Tyson and in the form of a watch. Percy was given flying shoes along his quest, which played a roll in the book, but was altered in the movie. In the book, Percy was supposed wear the shoes into the underworld and they were going to fly him into the pit of Kronos. In the movie, Percy uses the shoes to fly to the top of a statue and fight Luke. The battle between Percy and Luke was not in the book as a big fight, but was described as Percy being dung by a scorpion conjured by Luke to reveal his betrayal.
