The next time you purchase a new outfit think about how it ended up in your hands. While purchasing food make sure to read and understand the ingredients being used. The documentary, Food, Incorporation (Food, Inc.), directed by filmmaker, Robert Kenner proves that food production can lead to health/environmental issues. The short film, The Lorax, a Dr. Seuss tale, reveals the truth behind business that harm the environment to make clothing/household products. Fertilizers are used on crops to ripen fruit and vegetables. If food is not grown organically customers don’t truly know what is in it. Animals are also a big part of the food industry. However, animals are not always treated respectfully. For example, chickens remain crowded in barns and in the dark until they are slaughtered. Most animals are injected with hormones to be “fattened” up in order for business to make more money on their meat. When people work in the meat factories, they use antibiotics on the animals. By being around antibiotics all the time, they may no longer work on people and workers can suffer long term from this. The Lorax paints a futuristic picture for everyone showing what life can come to if we grant these businesses full power. The Lorax shows that business can get carried away, and humans are left with a limited amount of trees. However, in Food, Inc. there is an endless supply of food production. For instance, farmers save seeds, store seeds, and the industry is always revolving in new technology, Now there is meat cloning and new hormones to retrieve more meat from animals.
