After viewing the film Memento that is about a man by the name of Leonard (Lenny) that suffers from a condition known as anterograde amnesia. Anterograde amnesia is the loss of ability to create new memories leading to a partial or a complete inability to recall the recent past, even though long-term memories from before the event that caused the amnesia is still fully intact. The film was structured in two timelines, one in color and one in black-and-white, The scenes are switched often throughout the film. The black-and-white scenes are in chronological order, while the color scenes are ordered in reversed. Chronologically, the black-and-white scenes come first and the color scenes come after. Our sense self is similar to the widely known discussion “nature vs nurture.” You can allow your instincts or habits to shape your sense of self or you can allow your environment to shape your sense of self. I believe that events we are involved in do shape our sense of self because it depends on how we take in those events and how we move on from them, such as at the end of the film, when Teddy was admitting to Lenny that his wife wasn’t killed by “John G,” but she slipped into a coma by Lenny giving her to many insulin shots and Lenny couldn’t handle the guilt, so he started to repress the memories of her death. We are shaped by the people we surround ourselves with because most likely they’ll make you into some else, similar to nurturing you. An example of this in the film is the character Natalie that Lenny stays with near the end of the film. Natalie openly admitted to Lenny that she’ll use him to get rid of Dodd and Teddy and that it doesn't matter because he won’t remember her saying it. Natalie does accomplish using Lenny by taking all the pens out of his sight for he doesn't write a note to himself about what she said. Memories also create a sense of self by providing us a reminder of how we used to be but the problem of that is that memories can fade over time and become altered by us, such as how Lenny altered his memories of his wife’s
