The document essentially split the nation into two camps. On one hand, there was a group who welcomed the document, seeing it as necessary for progress. On the other hand, there was a camp which opposed the document, arguing that it represented an unwelcome change. The fact that it ushered a new form of governance where authority would be shared between the federal government and state authorities is one of the factors that made the constitution a controversial document (U.S National Archives and Records Administration, n.d). There are those who felt that the constitution took away authority from the state governments and therefore robbed them of their autonomy.
During the time period of the late eighteenth century the United States were seeking a new governing platform that would support the ideals present in the American Revolution. Principles such as freedom, independence and natural rights were among the driving forces in shaping the constitution. Throughout the creation of the document many disputes occurred, the Federalists wanted a strong central government with unchallenged authority while the Anti Federalists fought for personal freedoms and decisions to be made at a state level. Correspondingly once the Constitution was completed The Anti Federalist opposed to it. The start of the Civil War was caused by Southern Aggression in 1861. A small group of Union troops were stationed at Fort Sumter and were running low on supplies. The Confederacy was getting impatient with their presence in a fort that was supposed to be under Confederate control. On April 12th, 1861, they opened fire on the compound.(Civil War Trust) The Union troops surrendered up the fort two days later.

The first cause would be slavery; the reoccurring disagreement about its legality. Another cause was state rights; states wanted to make independent decisions.
Three events that led to the Civil War were Abraham Lincoln's election, Bleeding Kansas, and when Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas left the Union. The reason why the Election helped start the Civil War was because all the Democrats were angry with Abraham Lincoln because they wanted slavery but the Republicans wanted to leave it alone. So states started to leave the Union. All Lincoln wanted was everyone to be together and no separation. Bleeding Kansas also triggered the Civil War because of all of the violence and everyone fighting.
Many events led up to the Civil War, most, in my opinion fall around slavery. Slavery was a controversial topic that divided a nation, and brought war. The south felt like their rights were being attacked, and then the north was angered by the government's reaction to slavery, with their multiple compromises. These two conflicts only brought more problems, and war soon followed.
Most people say that slavery is the biggest and main cause of the Civil War, and they would be correct, but there are many other causes as well. Looking deeper into many of the options that were the big causes of the Civil War, one of the biggest was The Compromise of 1850. This is one of the main causes of the Civil War, along with slavery. I would say the Fugitive Slave Act, Dred Scott vs. Sandford, and the 1860 Election all led up the the Civil War. The Fugitive Slave Act was a big part because it inspired civil disobedience in northerners.
