During WWII there were many deaths and terrible battles but the worst of all of them was America dropping the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This tactic of bombing a city was the wrong decision by America, it was completely barbaric and was an act of total war something no country should ever use. The main issues with this decision was that it wasn’t an attack on a military base like Pearl Harbor but it was an attack on a populated city and Japan was prepared to surrender because they knew America and the Allied Powers would win the war. The main argument others have is that the Atomic bomb saved lives by creating a fast end to the war so it wouldn’t be strung out resulting in more deaths on both sides but Japan was prepared to surrender
Another incredible scientific advancement of the 1950s was the invention of the hydrogen bomb in 1952. The bomb’s unfathomable power was colossal as the bomb “weighed 65 tons and yielded 10.4 megatons of TNT, the unimaginable equivalent of 1,000 atomic bombs” (Falk 1). This was a massive and terrifying watershed in human history. For the first time, humans had the means with which to annihilate most of the life on Earth, including themselves. This development was not independent of international politics however, as the Soviet Union had created their own hydrogen bomb by 1953 which greatly accelerated the arms race between the US and the USSR.
The world was changed by the Manhattan Project, introducing major historical and ethical dilemmas, nations were introduced to the concepts of M.A.D, and countries could now have the capability to end the world potentially, bringing forth historical and ethical conflicts never seen before, such as the Cold War and the power of an atomic weapon. Starting with a letter to the president and evolving into a nationwide classified project with over 100,000 researchers. Leonid Fridman’s passage “America Needs Its Nerds” examines how intelligent people are disgraced for being interested in academics. Fridman argues that “nerds and geeks must stop being ashamed of who they are” through effective comparisons and a repetition of ideas to inform the citizens of America about the importance of smart minds. Furthermore, Fridman reiterates the concept of nerds being viewed differently compared to others in the first half of the passage. The author implied that society favored people who focused less on academic activities and more on being social or active.
All three stories in the packet were very similar in their topics. In all of the stories, multiple groups debate about the atomic bomb. It is evident that in all of the stories, everyone is determined to keep the president from dropping the atomic bomb. In the “Robert Oppenheimer Speech,” Robert Oppenheimer talks about how scientists are anxious waiting for the president’s decision regarding the dropping the atomic bomb.
In 1939, the scientific community, specifically German physicists had learned the secrets of splitting a uranium atom (The Manhattan Project” 2015). America realized that Adolf Hitler’s Germany obtained a massive amount of scientific talent. With their access had necessary raw materials and knowledge of the splitting of the uranium atom, they had the industrial capacity to produce an atomic bomb(“Manhattan Project”2014). The atomic bomb would eventually become the turning point of weaponry during World War II. On October 11, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt received a letter from Albert Einstein about the splitting of the uranium atom which could be beneficial in developing weapons for America during World War II.
World War II Narrative It was typical for me. Waking up and hearing the loud ringing of my alarm clock at 6 in the morning. I walk down stairs and eat the breakfast I eat everyday a breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee no sugar or cream. After that I got in my car and drive to the laboratory.
Throughout WWII, the US, Germany, the Soviet Union, and Japan were in an arms race for an advantage in the war through an atomic bomb. The US had developed the atomic bomb first throughout the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was a secret project that FDR started after Einstein sent him a letter warning the US that Germany was developing a nuclear weapon in 1939. On July 16, 1945, the atomic bomb developed throughout the Manhattan project was successful in the test run at Alamogordo, NM. At this time, the Germans had already surrendered to the Allies, and the war with the Japanese was extremely deadly on both sides.
Thesis statement: Though many speculate that the act of dropping the atomic bomb on Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) while not doing so on Europe (Germany and Italy) was racially motivated, racism played little to no role in these bombings. The United States of America and her allies were willing to end World War II at any cost, had the atomic bombs been available they would have been deployed in Europe. In the 1940’s there is no doubt that the United States of America was engulfed by mass anti-Japanese hysteria which inevitably bled over into America’s foreign policy. During this period Japanese people living in both Japan and the United States of America were seen as less that human.
As the second World War began, Allied Powers began to fear the strengths of Axis Powers, especially Germany. However, this fear rose dramatically among the Allied when Albert Einstein warned President Franklin Roosevelt that Nazi Germany was likely at work on creating a nuclear weapon. The Allied, concern that such weapons in the hands of Hitler could produce disaster for the world. Therefore, in 1942, America's attempt to plan and build an atomic bomb created the Manhattan Project. Manhattan Project eventually allowed US to create an atomic bomb, leading the Allied to the victory of World War II.
The atomic bomb was one of the greatest and most destructive inventions in American history. J. Robert Oppenheimer is known to be the “father of the A-bomb” and received numerous praises for his work ("Oppenheimer: American Prometheus"). The Manhattan project, where the Trinity bomb was set off, was where everything fell into place for Oppenheimer and his career with the atomic bomb. “J. Robert Oppenheimer was director at the Los Alamos site. Though an American, he had studied in Europe for years, and that was one reason why General Groves picked him for the job” (Claypool 45).
