The movie Milk tells the story of Harvey Milk, an openly gay politician who became the first openly gay person elected official in California. The movie follows his career from the 1970’s when he first moved to California till his assassination in 1978. Harvey moves to San Francisco and starts a small business with his partner Scott in the Castro district. He sees and experiences discrimination against the LGBTQ community and decides to act and become involved in local politics. He became a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ community advocating for rights and representation, organizing public campaigns, and building a community of supporters. “Milk” is a film that depicts a marginalized group just like women in the film industry. The LGBTQ community has faced underrepresentation and discrimination in the media and film. The movie sheds light on the discrimination and violence the LGBTQ community faces as we see when someone is beaten to death or when Harvey is assassinated. In the movie we see the importance women have in contributing to social and political movements. We see this when Anne Kornenberg takes over as the campaign manager of Harveys campaign. She plays a pivotal role in mobilizing his cause. For example, in the first scene that she's in the rest of the team is making fun of her for saying she will get an endorsement from a newspaper then with a few phone classes she is successful in getting the endorsement while the other members of the team were not. The chapter also discussed questions of gender and sexuality “Milk” shows the experiences of being gay and male and shows how societal expectations do not see this as normal and how this has an effect on Harvey. We see how his relationship affects him throughout the movie and how society views him through these relationships.
