“A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds” (“Child Abuse Statistics”). Social workers help the children who are abused get out of their unsafe homes and getting them proper education and care. As one prepares for a future in the field of social work, one must consider the job description, educational requirements, the NASW Code of Ethics, the duties and responsibilities, the type of social work, the work environment, and the wages and benefits.
There are many different types of social workers, but they all have one thing in common: helping people. Social workers almost resemble a therapist, they have to be able to have good listening skills, good problem solving skills, know body language, being able to make decisions, and even more (Fanning). Gloria Bastidas, a public educator and outreach coordinator, says “My main duty is to promote the breastcare program among uninsured women and educate providers and the community about the benefits of the program.” Some skills come naturally, but most have to be worked on and there are even classes to help develop them even more. Social workers have to be able to write effectively for reports, and have reading skills for earlier reports. Being able to speak efficiently is a must, depending on the type of social work, speaking can resolve many of the problems. Also, social workers usually come together and have meeting with their client’s family, so they will have to be able to explain what is going on in their client’s daily live. What connects to speaking is being good at reading body language. A prime example of this would be a client who is too ill to speak, the social worker will have to look at the body language of their client to see if they’re uncomfortable, hungry, sad, and the list just goes on …show more content…

All of types of social work gets paid a different amount. The highest paying type of social worker is the clinical social worker with a pay of $54,020 a year; while the lowest paying is the substance abuse and behavioral disorder social worker with a pay of $42,920 a year. The median salary of a social worker in 2015 was $42,350. The lowest paid social worker, who was in the 25th percentile, made around $27,690, while the highest, being in the 75th percentile, made around $73,400 (“How Much.” ). There are personal benefits to being a social worker. Having a job where all that is done is help people is very self-fulling. Even though it is stressful, just being able to help people in need makes it all worthwhile. Caring for a family’s loved one while they’re at work, making sure they take all of their pills on time and they eat the correct meals.
