The book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is about two social classes the Socs and the Greasers. The Greasers and the Socs have always had a rival by seeing who is better. When they try to find out who is better they have a rumble. During the rumble, there can be swearing and fighting. At many schools, the book is banned because of all the fighting and swearing along with the use of cigarettes. Some people think this book should be allowed in schools because of the lessons it can teach and how to work together no matter the situation. The Outsiders is a fantastic book to teach to middle school students because it shows the importance of teamwork, loyalty, and emotions. A main part of being a part of the Greasers is teamwork. For example, when Ponyboy was going into the burning church alone he heard Johnny boy say “ Hey Ponyboy, I looked around startled. I hadn’t realized Johnny had been right behind me all that way” ( Hinton 91-92). This proves teamwork because Johnny did not want Pony to go by himself. Loyalty is another way to show love for each other and to show you care. When Ponyboy got home from the hospital after Johnny died Pony and Darry were fighting because Pont talked back to Darry. As they were arguing Darry got a phone call on the house phone. He got off the phone and said “ He just robbed the grocery store and the cops are after him. We gotta go hide him” (Hinton 153). This gives an example of loyalty because they are not going to leave Dally to get hurt and go to jail. It also shows how the Greasers do not hesitate to be loyal to each other and they will do whatever they have to, to keep each other safe. They will think of each other first before they think of themselves because they are all the closest thing they have to
