In the poem The Canterbury Tales: The Pardoner’s Tale, Geoffrey Chaucer addresses what greed can do to people. More specifically, he argues that greed can lead people not only to kill others, but themselves as well. Chaucer writes, “Nevertheless, if I could shape things thus so that we shared it out- the two of us- wouldn’t you take it as a friendly act?” (235-237). What this quote is leading to, is that one of the men wants to kill the youngest of the three so that the gold they found could only be split two ways. From this quote, it can be seen that greed is driving a man to kill his own comrade for gold and other treasure.
