In Waters of Gold and Ashputtle, the some of the minor characters are being selfish. In Waters of Gold, Auntie Lily’s rich neighbor did not help a beggar, but when she saw that Lily got a bucket of gold, she rushed to help him. In Ashputtle, the two evil stepsisters were willing to cut off their toes and heels in order to a queen. Auntie Lily in Waters of Gold always helped everybody. In fact, she used all of her money to help people and she had none left for herself. So, she had to sell her land and her house to the neighbor, who was a selfish rich woman. “If you’d helped yourself instead of others, you wouldn’t have to do this.” said the neighbor. When a beggar came into the village, everybody including the rich woman either pushed him away of ignored him. But when he came to Auntie Lily’s house and asked for a bowl of water to wash his feet, she gave him a bucket to use and asked him if he’d like a drink or a meal. He respectfully declined, but told her to put the bucket by her bedside and do not look at it until the next morning. “‘It seemed important to him,’ she answered. ‘I’ll humor him.’ ‘Humoring people,’ snapped the neighbor, ‘has got you one step away from begging yourself.’” …show more content…
