Realism and liberalism are two theories that help us understand the intangible parts of human nature. They allow us to reach beyond the surface meaning of what is being said and truly analyze the intention behind the words that are being used. Realism to be identified has to first be understood. Realism is based on the foundational word of real, and realists explain the world as it “really” is (Zook, Lecture). This word speaks to the challenges, pleasures, and situation that is there in the society. It is not hidden or masked in a certain fear of the unknown. The individual is the cause and the individual is the nature of all being. Liberalism is focused on the individual and emphases on the core beliefs of self-individualism, human rights, the protection and upholding of laws. Above all, liberalism is about the choice to be whomever the individual would like (Zook, Lecture). Liberty is the root in which these ideas and presentations appear from. Without the foundation of liberty, liberalism would cease to be. Joseph Nye author of the Power In A Global Information Age wrote the following regarding the principles of liberalism rise seen during post World War II, “Partly in reaction to the inadequacies of neorealism, a number of theorists have begun to resurrect Liberal theory. While admitting the diversity of Liberal theories, they argue that the core of Liberalism is a concern for liberty” (Nye, 2004). The United States evolution as a nation is closely related to the principles seen within the ideas of liberalism. The nations foundational pillars that eventually would hold up the frame for a pluralistic society was set up on a simple understanding of liberalism. It is a speech that speaks to the hearts and minds of many Americans because it is filled with both voices. The voices of realism and liberalism are strongly balanced, as the administration was both diverse and willing to reach over across the other aisle. The speech was filled with hints at the liberal policies that the president implicit at through his entire speech. He spoke to a wide audience that many academics would agree have faced a very difficult history in the United States as both a minority and community of color. He spoke to Native Americans, African Americans and the newest community to come under the national spot light. Overall, the speech had a focused and key attention passed onto those oppressed by the majority. These minorities understood and represented the direct relations that can be felt with the President. The speech has significant focus provided to a minority that has been securitized by major powers as the third column. Under the thought of liberalism, this type of emphasis violates the basic premise of liberal thought. The whole focus on this minority prevented the pursuit of self-integration by casting an entire community as outsiders. Former President Obama quickly spoke to that narrative with the following. “But protecting our way of life requires more than our military. Democracy can buckle when we give in to fear. So just as we, as citizens, must remain vigilant against external
