Secrets, they have been a part of our world since the creation of human life. We have always kept secrets, and will never stop keeping secrets. But what happens when are secrets are revealed. Do we get in trouble? Do we face punishments? Who knows, it all depends on the secret. But sometimes secrets are so big that it takes someone to hack, to leak. It takes someone to find the secret itself and reveal to the world. For these three groups they did just that. The Washington Post, WikiLeaks, and other anonymous sources have the biggest impact on leaking government documents. American citizens were thrilled with both The Times and The Post because they uncovered a very long kept secret. The papers did have an effect on foreign policy. Not only did the papers damage the countries credibility, it damaged the nation’s Cold War policy (“Pentagon Papers Damage”). Overall, the papers damaged the government, but did help the press by ensuring them of their rights to publish. In September of 2008, someone hacked into Palin’s private email server and found emails containing official state business. The anonymous hacker gave the emails to WikiLeaks and they decided to publish the emails on behalf of the hacker. The emails contained state business that should've been handled through a state email address. This did break laws and effected in criminal charges and offenses. Overall, the emails showed that some political candidates (at the time of the leak, Palin was running for vice president alongside John McCain) aren't as transparent as we hope.
