Have you ever kept a secret? I’m not talking about when someone tells you something and you keep it to yourself it’s more like when you know something that no one else knows and telling someone about it takes away from your pleasure, from your secret. One man kept a huge secret for 33 years it was a secret that changed the face of the U.S. politics, his name was Mark Felt. Mark Felt, also known as “Deep Throat,” former FBI special agent was a big character in the Watergate Scandal he leaked information to two men working for ‘the Post’ at the time of the break in. The Watergate Scandal was a major political scandal that led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Gordon Liddy, former FBI agent, has reason to dislike Felt now but he claims even then Felt had a reputation. “He was an FBI slang, at the time, ‘a torpedo,’ what that meant was he was only too happy to advance his career at the expense of yours” (Deep). Woodward says that Felt had wanted to meet up with him, he wanted to talk about the Watergate tapes. In 2005, Mark Felt had finally confessed about him being the character named, “Deep Throat” and being the source of Woodward and Bernstein articles. His daughter, Joan Felt, never knew about his secret also until one day Woodward had visited Felt after so many years and she started to connect the dots and concluded, her father is “Deep Throat.” When she wanted confirmation, she asked Felt about his secret and to no one’s surprise he still denied everything. So, she begged him, “Dad you’ve got to tell me the truth. Please tell me the truth, I need to know. Tell me!” and so he did. He looked her in the eyes and said, “Alright if that’s the way it’s going to be. Alright I am, I was that person” (All the President’s). As it was known Felt came out to the press and it read, “Mark Felt, former deputy in chief of the FBI, has been unmasked as “Deep Throat,” the government official who leaked information relating to the 1972 Watergate burglary which culminated in the resignation of President Nixon” (Mark). To no one’s surprise there were individuals that did not believe that he was the person behind the leaks. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein confirmed it all. They confirmed that he was the person who gave them the information that was taken from the FBI and that he was the person that they would communicate with if they ever ran into something that was worth mentioning or where close to getting the case
