The Power of Words The worst thing about words: once you say them you can never take them back. Often times you don’t need to take your words back, But other times you do. Words and actions have the ability to alter others in positive or negative ways. The stories Sucker by Carson McCullers and Thank you Ma’am by Langston Hughes both explore the power of words and the ability they have to transform others feelings. This essay will dive into the positive and negative affects words have on the characters in both stories. Sucker by Carson McCullers involves the characters Pete and Sucker, whose relationship undergoes many stages and changes as both Pete and Sucker grow as individuals. Pete begins talking to this girl Maybelle. Pete and Maybelles evolving relationship makes Pete happy and begins to change him for the better. In the story Ms.Jones is taking an evening stroll when a young boy attempts to snatch her purse. Instead of just rescuing her purse and walking away, Ms, Jones invites the boy into her home. She feeds the boy dinner and scolds him on doing the right thing. She comforts the boy by saying “I were young once and I wanted things I could not get.”(90) She then sends the boy off on his own again, But this time he has a richer understanding of doing the right thing. By showing the young boy kindness and generosity, Mrs. Jones is allowing the boy to grasp an understanding on (word for theme). Mrs. Jones actions and words affected the young boy in a positive way. She can relate to the boy and gain his trust. Mrs. Jones shares experiences where she found herself in similar situations.
