School districts in the United States believe students should exceed in academics, but having extracurricular activities makes it difficult to complete the goal. Although some people say athletics can sharpen your brain; studies have proven that not investing time into educational classes will cause students to fail. Therefore, schools should get rid of after school sports because athletics can cost tremendous amounts of money, they cause distractions, and many athletes are failing classes.

Schools have limited budgets every year, and due to sports, districts have an insignificant quantity left for classrooms. According to an article by Amanda Ripley, “For home games, schools often pay for security, painting the lines on the field, and cleaning up” (11). For away games, many schools are paying for meals, hotels, and buses for the team, cheerleaders, and band (Ripley, 11). This information clearly explains that schools have immense amounts of money in their yearly budget, but are not choosing to spend it on academic materials that would benefit students greatly in their future careers. According to Ripley, “Players spend long hours practicing, and that commitment extends to the rest of the school-from late-night band practices and pep rallies to meetings with parents.” (11). After Premont Independent School District cancelled their sports in the spring of 2012, the passing classes spiked from 50% to 80% (Ripley, 11). These facts reveal that if schools eliminate sports, student athletes can go to school for their academics, not just for their athletics, and eventually their careers.
