“The real reason for not committing suicide is because you always know how well life gets again after the hell is over.” People are unable to realize how their situation can be resolved better than having to kill themselves. Terminally ill patients are notorious for taking their lives before they can realize the mistake they are making. They believe that it is best for their situation, however, there are multiple reasons for why they should reconsider their actions before something terrible happens. Doctor assisted suicides should not be allowed because of the effects it has on the deceased loved ones and how more terminally ill patients are overcoming their disabilities.
The right to assisted suicide is a heavily controversial and debated over topic that concerns people all around the United States. The arguments go back and forth about whether a dying patient has the right to end their life with the assistance of a doctor or physician. Some people are against it because of moral and religious reasons. Others are for it because of their compassions and respect for unhappy patients waiting to die naturally. Assisted suicide is prohibited by common law or criminal statute in all 50 U.S. states; medical aid in dying is specifically authorized in 5 states: Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Montana, and California.
Physician Assisted Suicide Within the past decade, Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS) has become a controversial topic within the medical field. However, many people are not entirely aware of the terminology regarding PAS (3). PAS is when a physician provides the necessary means and/or information to enable the patient to perform a life-ending act (AMA). In regards to physician assisted suicide there are many positive and negative arguments that can help us decide for ourselves on how we feel about PAS.
Some believe that this undermines the role of a physician as a healer. This argument is somewhat valid, but still should not make Physician Assisted Suicide illegal. The way I see it, a physician is always there to help it may be killing but the Physician is just prescribing the dose and the patient takes the pill on his/her own. Another argument is that a physician who helps a patient commit suicide, breaks the trust and bonds between a patient and his/her doctor. Again, we have a valid point.
Physician-Assisted Suicide: A Right to Murder? Doctors spend over eight years attending college, studying and practicing how humans work and how to save them. So why should it be right for physicians to help out their patients in killing themselves? If a person chooses to end their life, they completely loose the possibility of a medical miracle of being able to live through whatever condition they have.
Even though the ban of PAS was challenged in several court cases such as Vacco versus Quill in 1997 and Glucksberg versus Washington also in 1997, the Supreme Court and Congress left it as a state issue not a federal law because of the violation of the due process clause of the fifth amendment which states, “No person shall be… deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law…” and the fourteenth amendment which states “nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without the due process of law”. The United States Constitution allows states to prohibit physician assisted suicide but in 1997 the Supreme Court ruled that “assisted suicide is not a constitutional right” (Hall, Kermit). While some argue that PAD should be legalized to grant terminally ill patients the right to die with dignity, others believe it goes against the sanctity of life. People are able to choose what they are able to give life to another, so they should also be able to choose whether they themselves lives or dies. People should figure out if people should be allowed to request assisted suicide, whom should be able to request the assisted suicide, what methods are available, and who would regulate the people who were allowed to receive the treatment, as well as why. There is a hot topic going around that has led to a serious discussion. Should people be able to request assisted suicide? There are plenty of people that think that the terminally ill should be able to request this life ending decision.
One of the most adamant groups in favor of assisted suicide is the Gay Men 's Health Crisis. They released the quote "The fact that the circumstances of the disabled population are, as a whole, far less than ideal in this country, and are likely never to be perfect, is no justification for depriving those who have a terminal illness of the right to end their suffering. These individuals are entirely capable of making rational decisions. " They feel that even though a person may be destined to die, they can still make rational decisions and should be allowed to have their agony put to an end (Times 2).
Do you have the right to control your body? Individuals have the right to control their lives and liberty. A right which protects them from government intrusion into their personal choices.
If you were suffering and you knew the only way out was if you died would you want the doctors to put you out of your misery? At the moment assisted suicide is only legal in a few states but, many believe it should become legal everywhere in the United States. Assisted suicide is when someone is either brain dead or terminally ill and is suffering so the doctors give them a lethal injection to kill them. People have many things against this way of treating someone because they say that it is murder, when someone says this it makes them sound like they want the person who is suffering to suffer more. Assisted suicide should be legal but, used only as a way to end someone’s suffering or to kill someone who is brain dead.
The right to assisted suicide in the United States is a controversial and significant topic that seems to concern people all throughout the country. The debate goes back and forth about whether a terminally ill patient has the right to decide to die with the assistance of a physician. Of course, several people are against it, more commonly because of religious, ethical or moral reasons. Many competent dying patients in extreme uncontrollable pain and suffering request their attending physician to assist them in performing active euthanasia. Euthanasia is “ a mode of ending life in which the intent is to cause the patient’s death in a single act (also called mercy killing)” Nordqvist.
Many debates and controversies arrive on topics many people don’t agree upon. Some of those topics include abortion, medical marijuana, and many more. Assisted suicide also known as euthanasia is upon those topics that many people may or may not agree on. Some may say that it helps people end the pain or suffering they may go through, others say that it is like suicide and it is wrong and unjust, in many religions it is even a sin and in others it is a way to heaven and having people waiting for you. There are some pros and cons about assisted suicide.
Dying with dignity acts across the country go against many peoples’ religious views and also can be seen as going against a doctor’s Hippocratic Oath. “It makes sense for anyone to want to end their life free of pain and on the terms they choose but morally, ‘death with dignity’ conflicts with biblical standards and anti-suicide stances” (Lariat). The bible goes against suicide and anti-suicide acts are against death with dignity because it is seen as a way to try to escape the world. Assisted suicide would also change the practice of medicine.
You wake up and immediately the pain comes back to you - another unsuccessful surgery - your in a white room that your unsure that you'll ever escape, with one window, flashing lights, screens that have lines going up and down and a pillow that is harder than the op-ed that you have write. A doctor comes in talks to you and then leaves, you are left with two options, you can keep on living with this pain that is ever so close to unbearable you can battle through it and hope to make it to the end or you can end it all now with a needle that will send you into a coma that you can't escape from. This is the choice that people are given just before they choose Euthanasia. The painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma.
