The movement to ban pit bulls gained momentum after several high-profile incidents where dogs attacked humans. A case in 1989 sees a girl from Miami-Dade County, Melissa Moreira, attacked by her neighbor’s pit bull. Moreira’s case put Miami-Dade County in a frantic mode, which led to the decision to ban pit bulls. With the ban in place in Miami-Dade County, dogs that had any resemblance to the pit bulls were killed. In 2008, Miami-Dade County had more dog bites and attacks than Broward County, which was the neighboring county. In this case, banning a certain breed does not stop bites or attacks from happening. With the belief that pit bulls are aggressive and dangerous, it can become difficult for pit bull owners to find apartments. Additionally, these bans can lead to the euthanasia of many innocent dogs, as they are deemed illegal simply based on their appearance. The law banning pit bulls is unjust and unfair because it is discriminatory against responsible owners and their pit bulls, so banning does not address the social issue of irresponsible pet ownership and any dog can bite not just pit bulls, although the bans would get pit bulls out of dog fighting, it is still discriminatory against responsible owners and their pit bulls, it does not address inefficient pit bull owners, and any dog can bite. Banning pit bulls unfairly penalizes well-behaved dogs and their conscientious owners, reflecting a discriminatory approach that overlooks individual behavior. When discussing the argument of banning pit bulls because of untrustworthy owners, individuals could overlook how such bans do not consider the individual actions of the dog or the owner's efforts to train and raise the pit bulls
