Betsy Devos is a very controversial person who has a lot of problems. Many wonders if she is a good pick for Secretary of Education because if she doesn’t understand the difference between growth and proficiency what will keep her from failing. The other side argues that she is no different then from Obama's picks. Unlike other candidates, she has a big love for kids of all ages. It is very well known that Betsy Devos is very unqualified for the job from the article called Betsy Devos still loves Common Core. Betsy Devos views are not so different from the Democrats. The reason Democrats don’t like Betsy Devos is because they will no longer have a monopoly on education. Unlike the other article, it talks about how she is qualified and the different programs and views she is going to bring into the education system. She is going to lower the amount of power the federal government has in states education. Obama administration is described as an octopus reaching into the education system. “ Under the Obama administration, the federal government functioned as a giant octopus, bypassing families, communities, and states in order to reach its tentacles into the school curriculum, teacher evaluation, values conformity and even restroom policies.” ( Ashford 2017) Her idea is to let kids of different religions build their own schools or choose which schools they go too. The funding will be more evenly distributed giving disadvantaged kids the chance to learn. These disadvantaged kids will have the choice of what school they can attend too. The author brings up the fact that she has never been a teacher, principal or an educational policy work but she is still qualified. Steven Singer that wrote about how terrible Betsy Devos will be for education and how unqualified she is. Bruce Ashford writes about how Betsy Devos is qualified. They both go back to what the idea of being qualified is. Being qualified in Steven Singer eyes is being a teacher and understanding the public school system. Bruce Ashford says that Betsy Devos is qualified because she has a great heart for the children.
The two articles are similar in that they both talk that Betsy Devos has a great love for kids and is involved in poticials. That is the only way that they are similar. Betsy Devos has a great love for kids and has gone great measures to support kids. These great measures are by financial means.
