Many establishments believe that to allow birth control coverage, you are contributing to the violation of religious principles of certain governing organizations. There has been much of a heated debate for this issue for some time, and as expected, has offended many people and put many in hardships that count on this coverage to support themselves through life’s obstacles. Although, some may argue that since colleges are not actually required to provide health insurance to students, but the Affordable Care Act does have polices set to assist women in covering preventive services such as contraception and sterilization, that they have already done their part in helping. Some may argue that Wheaten college and religious affiliated nonprofit companies such as Hobby Lobby and many others are already doing their employees and students justice by providing these options, but to continue providing them is where we question if they really care about their customers, employees and students. If you are providing access to only particular contraceptive methods, as the Christian owner of Hobby Lobby only accepted four of the 20 federally approved contraceptive methods, then why not all of them? Whether It is personal beliefs or religion, why not allow those to make a responsible decision for themselves, these affiliates are assuming that the other 16 methods are considered abortion and are unacceptable. Who are we to criticize and inform what someone does with their healthcare rights? This specific organization and owner believes pregnancy occurs when the egg becomes fertilized by the sperm, if anything were to interfere with this fertilized egg then it is considered an abortion. This includes birth control methods such as the IUD, since this product is designed for sperm to have a more difficult time reaching the egg it is deemed similar to an abortion. It is believed these types of contraceptives “kill fertilized embryos”, opposed to condoms in which they only prevent the sperm from going anywhere, or the pill that prevents ovulation. These have been deemed as OK to use, but why? Why is this a claim made by people who are of a religious nature? Providing those with the ability to make a responsible decision with their bodies proves you ultimately care about the health and prosperity of those around you. Implicating your personal beliefs or judgments on these issues from a business standpoint creates a bigger issue abroad. Many can understand that not everyone may agree with that person’s decisions they have made in life, but to make the decision for them is ethically negligent and proves that they have allowed their faith to direct their business decisions.
