Abortion: Should Women Have the Right to Choose?
Abortion is defined “as the deliberate action of ending a woman’s pregnancy usually performed during the early stages of pregnancy” (Neft 12). Women rights on the other hand, are described “as the legal rights of women against discrimination and the promotion of equality” (Alexis 400). The topic of abortion and women's rights is a good example that analyzes a conflict that exists between the two. Randy Alcorn, an American Protestant Author, argues that according to pro-life supporters “For women who demand complete control of their body, control should include avoiding the risk of an undesirable pregnancy through the responsible use of contraception or, if that is not possible, through abstinence” (Alcorn 3). What they are indicating is that even though women have the rights to do as they wish with their bodies, it doesn’t mean those rights should include getting rid of the life beginning in their womb. Professor of Law, Lisa Ikimeso, argues that according to pro-choice group members “The notion that it is constitutional to have a right to privacy, but also the issue that abortion is fundamentally a fight for a woman right to govern her own body. Pro-choice advocates believe in this right to privacy, freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into their personal and private affairs. And they see it not as an ideological fight rooted in religious beliefs, but a civil rights pursuit advocating a woman’s right to choose” (Ikimeso 731).This group believes that any action by the government to legalize abortion, will cause them to view as a violation of women’s rights to privacy as well as their civil rights.
