Banned Books Censorship is the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, or other that is considered obscene. Censorship was used back in the 1800s with fascist states. Like censorship, book banning is the prohibition from a book being published and circulated by a government authority. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is a novel that has been challenged and banned. The Glass Castle is about a girl named Jeannette growing up with a mentally ill mother and a drunk father.

Some people may be all for it and believe their children should not be exposed to realism that comes from books ‘trying to protect them.’ What ever happened to the freedom of speech? Throughout the course of time, governments expose certain things that citizens have to see. Although, there are a lot of urgent messages that people do not receive. In the book Fahrenheit 451 it revolves around the idea of the governments censorship of literature and the ban of books. There are a countless amounts of reports of government bans on certain things. There are also a lot of other places across the globe where government censorship lies.
Book banning in public schools should cease in existence, for the reason that controlling what students should or should not read violates the first amendment right of freedom of speech, some students to feel left out or treated as burdens when they are not allowed to read a book for an assignment, leaving minority students misrepresented or not represented at all, and preconditions the mindsets of students to formulate a preconceived idea rather than students formulating their own opinions. To form their own opinions students need to be exposed to all avenues in a safe, controlled environment, such as schools, in order to truly find out who they are, and who or what they want to represent. First If you let people have too much freedom will they abuse it to the best they can. Where's Waldo was banned for side boob where the book was made to find things hard to find someone spotted the side of a girl's boob and decided to ban it even though most kids will have seen that if they go to the beach ever. Lord of the flies was banned because there was bullying which this book does have a frequency to it, but it can also be used as a show that bullying is wrong. Another book called slaughterhouse was banned for being sexually explicit and having excessive violence.
The second I got the book list for this class, I found myself puzzled and coming back to the same questions, “Why are any of these books banned and how does a book even get banned?”. Banned Books are books that are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means. Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech.

At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself.
