Take a moment to consider your opinion of Charter Schools. For the most part, Charter schools have made a positive impression on the general public. When most people reflect back on their education, they think of their neighborhood school, where they fell in love for the first time, made life time friendships--had a teacher which s around the nation. Initially, introduced to help children who are unable to learn in a typical setting. They have hit the ground running and have managed to lure numbers of public school students to register with them. Choice gives you the sense of being in control, you feel powerful and in control. Many believed choice would incite competition between schools, which in turn would lead to higher quality schools over all. Giving parents the opportunity to choose where their children are educated was thought of as a win-win. Diane Ravitch, in the book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System, “They predicted that choice would transform American education. They were certain that choice would produce higher achievement.” (Ravitch, 2010) The concept of charter schools was first introduced by Albert Shanker. He felt teachers were capable of running their own schools, which would be housed within their current school. Teachers would be given autonomy to try different ways to teach students who were not having success in a traditional setting.The schools were intended to work in partnership with traditional schools, sharing ideas and information.
