A charter school is one that is established by charter and run by teachers, parents, and other members of the community. It uses tax money but does not have to run in adherence to the rules of a particular district, city, or state (Merriam-Webster). Recently, many states have initiated programs to create privately funded charter schools as an alternative to public education. This has created many positives and negatives amongst the educational stakeholders. Parents and students are left debating over whether to leave traditional educational options behind and become a part of the new educational trend of charter schools. However, charter schools have many encouraging aspects for students excel their potential.

President Obama has promoted charter schools as a way to give advantages to a disadvantaged population in the Rtt program, but the programs seem to have given way to separateness for students of color. All cities and towns have an economic segregating mechanism earthier property values, or location. In some urban areas segregation is used in the admission process. Parents are ushered to a lengthy presentation of how tough this will be with longer hours and intense parental involvement. Many parents of lower economic levels are unable to commit to such schedules and still be able to provide for their families (Knaak, & Knaak, 2012). They are forced to make other choices. Many students that transfer from traditional public schools to more segregated charter schools have shown to gain a disadvantage in achievement not only in test scores but also in ways that promote lower standards of living not upward mobility (Frankenberg, Sigel-Hawley & Wang, 2011).
