When it comes to money, there will always be some sort of dispute and differences because that is what people usually work for, which is to live comfortably and support their families. There is a saying that says “money is the motive” and March Madness doesn’t fail to deliver on bringing in the money. The NCAA tournament for men’s collegiate basketball takes place from March to April, and brings in so much money each year for the NCAA. The number one revenue generator for March Madness is Broadcast Rights (Investopedia). CBS agreed to pay the NCAA 16 million dollars a year for broadcast rights (Investopedia).
II. NCAA Amateurism rule and the problems with it The NCAA was established on the principles of keeping collegiate athletics on the amateur level. This meant that no one could play on programs on collegiate level with people from professional teams or other leagues. The NCAA argues that amateurism is necessary to preserve academic integrity and ensure that receiving a quality education is a top priority (Treadway, 2013).
From Division I to the pros, there are many great sporting events, but overall one reigns supreme. This is the men's NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) college basketball tournament, which includes a 68 team, single elimination, bracket style battle for the title of National Champion. During this tournament, or so called "March Madness," teams play games throughout the month of March with a "survive and advance strategy. " This madness forces teams to leave it all on the line, as they fight for survival one game at to be crowned national champion. " March Madness" is the most exciting, frequent, and interactive sporting event, which makes it the best event in sports.
Also, the players like these who grew up in poverty are usually the ones who are smartest with money because they know what poverty is, and they do not want that for their own families. Although these players must provide for their family, getting an education is extremely important as well. Having a plan for the future other than basketball will help these athletes go even farther in life. If these athletes are staying in school, they are still going to school for free on a scholarship. College teams are now recruiting based on if that player decides to enter the NBA draft after the college season or stay for more than one year. This rule also ruins the March Madness Tournament because viewers are only seeing these great players but only for one year in college and then moving on instead. You could see these great young players develop and become stars in the NBA like Lebron James or Kobe Bryant, which they both came straight out of high school and into the NBA and have become legendary players. These students love the game so much, they allow the risk to outweigh the reward. What 's different about college is, by the time you 're in college you 're almost fully developed, so collegiate athletics is the start of more severe, high risk injuries that could change your life. There aren 't many high risky none paying jobs in the world today, this is important for the athletes who are talented enough to go professional because this is their future. Going pro is just some people’s destiny so they make short, well paid career out of it.
College Athletes Can Not be Paid For far too long the dark cloud of compensating college athletes has hung over college athletics. This debate has waged for years, but has increased in recent years as the money that the NCAA and the universities are making off of the student athletes and their accomplishments, is on the rise. Most of these athletes will not play in the major professional sports leagues in the United States. For example, only 1.6% of division one college football players get drafted into the NFL, furthermore only 1.2% of men's basketball players get drafted into the NBA (“Estimated Probability”).
Colleges are scouting or looking at kids from the age of ten years old. For March Madness (college basketball tournament) a student athlete would miss up to six days of class that they would have to make up later on, due to traveling and having to be with the team. It is also more common for athletes who play football or basketball to go pro than in any other college sport.
The athletes do get an education with a little money for food and other expenses to play at the high level they play at. Most top division 1 athletes in football and basketball do not want to go college but that is the only way to get to the next level. In 2017, of the 253 players drafted to the NFL, 251 were playing in the NCAA in 2016 and 44 of the 60 drafted to the NBA played college in 2016. Over half of the draftees in basketball were underclassmen who did not graduate from college.
College athletes generate tens of millions of dollars for their schools each year, yet are not compensated beyond a scholarship as they are considered amateurs. NCAA Men’s basketball is a prime example of this problem. All the athletes want is money to help them get situated in school, but because the NCAA pays them nothing, many try to leave after one year in an attempt to become a professional as soon as possible. So these individuals are missing out on an extra three years of education and just making money. And what if these same athletes don’t make it?

Out of all the people that try out for the NBA/NFL, only 1% of those people actually get in. Many people are debating on the topic of whether the NBA/NFL should make college a requirement. At the moment, people are wanting to shut down the law so that the players who try out don’t have to go to college. Over 100,000 people try out for the NBA/NFL but only a little bit of people get in. That leaves a lot of people’s futures destroyed, so most people say it’s good to have a backup degree just in case.

The NFL has different rules than college football. When playing receivers only need to have one foot in bounds for the pass to count as completed, but in college you need to have two feet in for it to count.
Did you know that depending on the sport, students who play sports in college most likely have less than a 2% chance of becoming professional athletes? At middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country, everyone is arguing over whether or not students with failing grades should be allowed to play sports. In my opinion, a good education is so very important for our country’s youth, especially the athletes. Not a lot of kids are good enough to play in the top college sports programs in the country. But even those who are, still have an astonishingly low chance at making the professional leagues.
