Counts v Cedarville School District is a case that happened in 2002, in Cedarville Arkansas. This case is an example of a school board trying to censor a certain book in the school’s library. A parent complained about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, saying that the book teaches children that parents, teachers and rules are “stupid” and to be ignored. She also argued that the book teaches children such things as “good witches” and “good magic” (Grogan). The library committee voted unanimously to keep the book and series in the library but the school board overturned the ruling and voted 3-2 in favor of removing the series off of the libraries shelves.
Facts This case arose out of the consolidation of Lemon v Kurtzman from Pennsylvania and Early v Di Censo from Rhode Island. In the two cases, the state had adopted laws that required the state to provide aid to church related elementary and secondary schools. The Rhode Island’s statute provided for financial support for non-public schools by supplementing 15% of teachers’ salaries. The Pennsylvania statute provided funding for salaries, textbooks and instructional materials for non-public schools.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, most the US education funds comes from state and local government, approximately 93% (PBS, 2008). The federal government only shares a little of responsibility on education funds. In most states, the taxes are collected in different forms, property tax, sales tax, corporation tax and personal tax. Because of this system, it leads some states to an inequitable allocation of tax to fund schools. Poor places like East St. Louis that Kozol described in his book, tax itself on a very high tax rate, the local government couldn’t provide adequate fund into their school system.
A major issue in American politics today is the issue of school funding and how schools should be funded. In the current funding system for American public schools, nearly half of the funding comes from local property taxes. This causes disparity among schools in wealthier areas compared to poorer areas. The faults in this system has caused a large group of people to fight for equal funding in public schools to allow for fair and equal public schooling. In the article “Unfinished Business: The Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education”, written by William C. Hubbard, he states that “We have to stop tolerating separate and unequal schools in this country today, and we must reenergize public education in America through equitable funding.

Would you want anyone to ban books so you couldn’t further your education? School Board members should not ban certain books because students can get more of a challenge from certain books, you also can get many life lessons from a more mature book, and students also get more of a choice which means more books to read. One reason I believe school board members should not ban books is because it gives students more of a challenge. For example, teachers like to challenge kids to read above their grade level and reading more mature books will get them there. However, how will they get assigned harder or more challenging books if those kinds of books are banned from the school library.
In the book Shoot your Shot, by Vernon Brundage jr he talks about the big names in the NBA like Lebron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, and many more basketball players who are known for their crazy high skill level and how they adhered to to become the best players. Throughout the book it goes over how each individual player has or had key principles that were applied to their lives and how they can be applied to the readers' lives as well. The two themes represented in this paper are, Stay surrounded with those who want to succeed and Use unique talents on a unique path. In the book Shoot Your Shot Brundage shows the theme Stay surrounded with those who want to succeed many times throughout the book.
I found this important because it almost as if standardized testing has become about business and politics, not education. For example, When Congress increased this year’s budget for the Department of Education by $11 billion, it set aside $400 million to help states develop and administer the tests that the No Child Left Behind Act Mandated for children in grades 3 through 8. Among the likely benefactors of the extra funder were the four companies that dominate the testing market—three publishers and one scoring firm
Schools all across America have banned novels that can help kids learn and grow. Speak, is one novel that has been challenged by many schools. Speak is about a very relatable high schooler named Melinda Sordino. It has many great lessons to teach and has helped lots of kids get through troubling times. Speak is an example of why schools should not be allowed to ban books or authors.
The First Amendment in the United States was created in 1789. Within the First Amendment is the right of religion, freedom of speech, the press, right of the people to assemble, and for people to petition the Government. Freedom of speech is linked with the freedom of religion, the press, and for the right to assemble because all of those activities involve speech in some sort of way. In the United States constitution freedom of speech was established in 1791. Freedom of speech is very controversial, therefore many Supreme Court cases have been formed over the years.
What are Books? Books are the keys to the future and meant to give its readers a moral lesson. Often times we forget about what the book is saying and only look at how it is said. For this reason many generations are are left out on the knowledge and moral lessons that the books give. They are left out because the books that obtain the knowledge and moral lessons are banned from high school libraries.
Censorship Censorship in schools may not be the best choice for enriching the future minds of the United States of America. Children of the United States of America should have the right to learn about anything for it is there amended right. Taking knowledge away from them and censoring it should not be the answer to keeping our Children pure it should be what we teach our kids. We need to teach them right and wrong that is what will keep our child’s mind pure. Many books are being taken off shelves every day in student libraries because a couple people do not think that the book is suitable for children.
Legislations affect how schools work by ensuring that pupils, staff, parents, and visitors are safe in the school setting. The banning books: Praised or Disapproved. Many books have been banned all around the world despite that people still think that books should not be banned because of the content inside even if the book has a good message. Books such as Harry Potter have been banned for it use of magic and witchcraft. But still others think that the lesson is more important. Banning books have pros and cons and can be seen either way.
