“Mankind will take on more responsibility for his own evolution” (Wilmut and Highfield 249). Patients, parents and regulators will bear the burden of responsibility when deciding whether technology should be used and under what circumstances it should be used. There are four main stakeholders in designer babies. First is the babies because they are the ones affected the most, as the main target of PGD. When deciding whether or not to design a baby, one should first think about the babies desire. Without the baby having consent, they are unable to make their own choices and decisions. Without government approval, these research and medical institutes may not even be able to continue their work. “For example, according to a January issue of the Time Magazine, the Bush Administration had banned stem cell research, and research institutes had to move to other countries where their work was approved of” (Joey, Clarissa, Cherise, and Tesia). This had slowed down research development, until the ban was lifted by President Obama. As of today, most governments have not approved of designer babies. However, in the case that government approval has been provided, successful researchers can also gain a great deal of fame and credit. Now, many parents are able to choose the gender of their child through PGD, which can cause a shift in society for the future. These gender imbalances already exist in many countries. “For example, most rural Indians prefer to have a male child. They believe that a boy is better, as he is smarter, and can be a source of income for the family. Girls are just burdens on the family, both emotionally and financially” (Sunku). Thus, if these people were allowed to choose the gender of their baby, then they would ensure that they only have boys.
